In order to strengthen the cultivation of scientific literacy among middle school students and enhance their core competencies and ecological and environmental awareness, on May 28, 2026, under the guidance of the university’s Office of Science and Technology and the Science and Technology Association, our college organized a science popularization team to visit Fuping Middle School and carry out interdisciplinary integrated science outreach activities. The activities consisted of two parts: thematic science popularization lectures and interdisciplinary fun experimental interactions.
Deputy Director Qu Xinyun of the Office of Science and Technology delivered the opening address. In his speech, he stated that the university has always regarded serving local basic education and helping to improve the scientific literacy of young people as an important mission to fulfill its social responsibilities as a higher education institution and to implement the strategy of revitalizing the country through science and education. This activity brought together experts, scholars, young teachers, and students to form a science popularization team that entered Fuping Middle School, deeply integrating the popular science resources of the university with basic education in secondary schools. The aim was to bring cutting-edge scientific knowledge, engaging scientific experiments, and innovative thinking methods to the youth, and to ignite the scientific dreams of the children.

At the thematic science popularization lecture session, three experts delivered wonderful presentations on extended fields related to geography, empowering and enhancing the activities of the Discipline Month. Among them, Professor Yang Peng, under the title The Wonderful World of Polymers, explained relevant knowledge about polymer materials. By combining research and industrialization achievements, he built a knowledge bridge between chemistry and geographic ecological applications, helping students recognize the important value of materials science in environmental governance and ecological protection, and broadening their interdisciplinary cognitive horizons.

Professor Li Xiaoyun, with the title "Invisible Invaders: The Secrets and Hazards of Microplastics," focused on current hot topics in ecology and the environment. He elaborated on the pollution sources, transmission patterns, and ecological hazards of microplastics. By integrating knowledge of soil remediation and environmental governance, he guided students to establish a development concept that emphasizes harmony between humans and the natural environment.

Associate Professor Liu Xiaokang, drawing on the regional characteristics of Northwest China, delivered a lecture themed "The Beauty of Deserts: A Grain of Sand's Journey." He explained the stories of aeolian landforms and environmental evolution in arid regions, vividly presenting the unique charm of physical geography and effectively stimulating students' enthusiasm for geographical inquiry.

To further expand the outcomes of classroom teaching, our college's Fun Chemistry Experiment Team designed interdisciplinary integrated science popularization experiments centered on four core modules: ecological protection, carbon cycle, greenhouse effect, and carbon capture. These experiments were precisely aligned with classroom teaching content and extended the teaching experiments. During the experiments, the students actively participated, dividing tasks and collaborating to complete various operations. Through exchanges and discussions, they explored the intrinsic connections among different disciplines. Not only did they gain knowledge and enjoyment, but they also developed a profound understanding of the significance of the "dual carbon" goals (carbon peaking and carbon neutrality).

This activity fully leveraged the disciplinary strengths, faculty advantages, research capabilities, and talent resources of Shaanxi Normal University, actively serving local basic education. It effectively validated the practical value of interdisciplinary integrated teaching, using science popularization as a bridge to break down disciplinary barriers. Not only did the students gain knowledge and inspire reflection, but it also explored an effective pathway for university-local collaboration in science education. Our college will further deepen exchanges and cooperation with primary and secondary schools, continuously channeling high-quality science education resources to the front line of basic education, and jointly contributing to the high-quality development of basic education.
